Sohei Nishino (b. 1982) explores the complexity of map-making, fusing the humanism of cartographic history with the informational overload of the digital age. Over several months, Nishino walks through a city armed with a 35 mm camera and a paper map, but with no prescribed route. Back in his darkroom outside Tokyo, he develops hundreds of rolls of film into contact sheets, cuts out the images and pastes them one by one onto a board. It is a painstaking task, done entirely by hand. When the collage is complete, he documents it with a high-resolution digital photograph, effectively erasing the physical traces of his labor.
